The Newport Parks Renaissance Commission (NPRC) was established in 2014 as a grassroots initiative driven by volunteers from each of Newport’s neighborhoods. NPRC’s mission is: “Building community by revitalizing green space and promoting recreation to continue making Newport a great place to live, work and play.” As a result, NPRC encourages urban renaissance and livable communities - regional focus areas in Northern Kentucky’s Vision 2015. NPRC believes that there are insufficient parks and green space to support Newport’s urban population’s need for exercise, sports, socialization, etc. NPRC seeks to improve the quality, safety, utility, and accessibility of parks and green space in Newport and, in doing so, to enhance the quality of life for residents and to allow parks to serve as a gathering place for the community.
NPRC identified Buena Vista as the park with the most need for improvement and the greatest potential for impacting the community. Thanks to the generous support of Fuel Cincinnati®, NPRC replaced the roof on the shelter at Buena Vista Park in December 2014. In March 2015, NPRC partnered with the Newport Recreation Commission to host an Easter Egg Hunt at Buena Vista Park with over 200 in attendance.
